Darlington Prep has an old pay phone in the hall that’s been modified to work without coins and I always make a point of using it. There is something awesome about holding the heavy receiver against my ear and dialing out on the rotary. It feels like a piece of history suspended in time. Liam Darlington, son of the school’s founder, is a friend and pen pal of mine. I let him know I was coming into town and told him I’d give him a “bell” (that’s English slang for phone call) so we could catch up over tea.
